Are you considering pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree?

If so, you may wonder whether there are entrance exams to get into these programmes.

The answer is more complex than a simple yes or no.

MBA programmes do typically include exams – not just at the end of each of your courses, but before you can even begin. Most require you to write an exam prior to admission to test whether you are likely to be able to cope with the level of work required, and many use these results to allocate limited seats to the students who show the best potential for success.

In this blog post, let’s explore different types of MBA programmes and whether they have entrance exams.

What is an MBA?

An MBA, or Master of Business Administration, is a highly sought-after postgraduate degree for those who aspire to climb the corporate ladder or start their own businesses, as it prepares students for leadership roles.

Types of MBA programmes

Different types of MBA programmes cater for students’ diverse requirements with full-time, part-time, executive, online learning and specialised MBA courses.

  • Full-time MBAs: Full-time MBAs are the traditional format. Students study in a classroom with their peers. These programmes usually take two years and require students to commit fully to their studies.
  • Part-time MBAs: Part-time MBAs provide more flexibility for professionals who want to balance work with education. These MBA programmes are designed for those who don’t want to leave their jobs but still wish to earn an advanced degree.
  • Executive MBAs: This programme format targets mid-career professionals seeking career advancement or transition into leadership positions. Executive MBAs are tailored towards senior executives whose schedules may not allow them the luxury of attending regular classes.
  • Online MBAs: Online MBAs offer access to virtual classrooms from anywhere at any time, provided you have a reliable internet connection. This option suits people who prefer self-paced study environments. Online programmes are sometimes more-cost effective for students than classroom-based ones.
  • Specialised MBAs: Specialised MBA programmes cater for specific industries such as healthcare management, finance or marketing. Choosing a specialisation can give you deep knowledge and expertise that sets you apart in your chosen field.

What is tested for admission to an MBA programme

This depends on the MBA programme you are interested in, and the organisation offering it.

Most of the top schools require prospective candidates to sit entrance exams such as the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), which assesses linguistic, quantitative and abstract thinking skills. They will also assess your performance in previous academic studies, your work experience, interview you, and then make their admissions selections on the basis of criteria relating to of all of these combined.
