Many young Master of Business Administration (MBA degree) graduates wonder whether they should go on to complete a doctoral degree, given that it’s a great way to advance a career and improve earning potential.

There’s a lot to consider, not least of which are the type of doctoral degree and the challenges you are likely to face while completing it, particularly if you are unable to study full-time.

This article covers:

  • Can I pursue a PhD or a DBM after an MBA degree?
  • The nature of a PhD
  • The nature of a DBM
  • Consider your career goals after an MBA programme
  • Applying for a doctorate in business
  • The investment needed in time and effort

Can I pursue a PhD or a DBM after an MBA degree?

Yes. Your MBA – provided you attained at least 65% for it – is a stepping stone to a doctoral degree. Many schools may require you to take up research related to your master’s studies. Either way, it’s essential to understand the differences between the scope and objectives of a PhD and a DBM, and what it takes to earn one.

The nature of a PhD

A PhD, or Doctor of Philosophy degree, is a research-based qualification requiring individuals to conduct original research in their field. It typically takes four to six years to complete and is designed mainly for those wish to be experts in their domain, and to contribute to advancing knowledge in their discipline.

The PhD, which has greater focus on theory than the DBM, is usually the better choice for those who wish to pursue careers in advanced education and research.

The nature of a DBM

The Doctorate of Business Management (DBM) – like a PhD –  is a globally recognised research-based terminal degree. However, its focus is on solving real-world industry problems, combining research, theory, and practice. It typically takes three to six years to complete and is designed for those who want to enhance their knowledge, become thought leaders in their fields, and contribute to developing new business practices and theories.

It won’t just help you build knowledge of various aspects of a business, such as human resource development, organisational theory, strategic management, and so on – it will also help you to contribute essential leadership perspectives to your domain.

Consider your career goals after an MBA programme

What is it you want? When considering whether to pursue a PhD or a doctorate in business management after an MBA programme, you must have a clear understanding of your career goals.

Do you want to become a thought leader in your field and contribute to developing new business practices? And do you want to pursue a career in management or entrepreneurship? If so, the DBM will be a good fit.

Or would you rather focus on conducting research and advancing knowledge in your field? If you are you interested in pursuing an academic career or a research-oriented role in industry, the PhD may be a better option for you.

Research your options

Before you decide to pursue a PhD or doctorate in business management, look for schools that offer programmes in your field of study and have a strong industry reputation, and then for a programme that fits your goals and interests.

Then check the admission requirements for the programme to ensure that your previous studies fulfil its criteria.

Factors to consider

Your studies might take six years or more to complete, and will require significant research, writing, publishing, presenting and defending your findings, which can be time-consuming and challenging. How are you going to accommodate the time commitment required?

Are your family and your employer prepared to help you accommodate your commitment to your doctoral studies? What are you going to have to change to keep everyone happy?

Applying for a doctorate in business

Applying for a doctorate in business is a rigorous process. You need to call on a solid academic background and research experience, and to submit a clear research proposal. Be prepared to devote a significant amount of time to this process.

The investment needed in time and effort

Whatever you decide, your doctorate in business management will require a significant investment in terms of time, effort, and dedication … even before you begin the programme! Remind yourself, when the going gets tough, of why you decided to pursue the programme. With the right mindset, you will achieve your academic and career goals, and become a thought leader.

If you are already down the track with a business career, consider the Doctorate of Business Management programme offered by Regenesys Business School Nigeria.
